He is a continuous caller to hold and equal dialogue between Jakarta-Papua with the mediation of third parties. He has written a number of books that reveal what he values has historical errors that continue to be violations of Human Rights, discrimination, and negative stigma in Papuans.
Himself acknowledges that his views often conflict with state policies. And he never worried about that. He balked into giving stigma like (OPM)West Papua Liberation Army, separatists and treason to Papuans. And what it's he wants to fight.
"I will just shut up and stop fighting if anyone shows to me in the Bible, God's Word, it is written that God's people in the land Papua were created by (OPM)West Papua Liberation Army, separatists and treason," he wrote in the introduction of one of the books he wroting.
Although his opinions are very often contrary to policies from Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), in the matter of religious harmony he is a figure who is firm and does not want to compromise. He strongly opposed the categorization of humans based on religion. One of his most recent opinions was on terrorism, related to a series of suicide bombings in Surabaya and the arrest of suspected terrorists in various cities.
It seems that this man whose real name is Ambirek Godmendekmban Yoman also looks at the emergence of views that connect terrorism with religion. And as a Christian clergyman, he seems to be disturbed if discourse on terrorism leads to discrediting a particular religion.
"The terrorist has no relation to the religion of Islam and Christianity. Both of these religions teach about God, love, truth, justice, peace and hope," he said in a piece he spread through his (WA) Hhatsapp are account (18/05 / 2018).
Periodically - sometimes more than once a day - Dr. Socratez Yoman does send his writings in (WA) whatsapp groups he has follows. He gave a lot of opinions about events that's were of public concern.
"If there are people who say the Islamic religion is a terrorist, that is a very wrong judgment. What I understand is that the people misinterpreted their faith," he continued.
According to him, humans do not need to hurt and injure their hearts, minds and bodies just because of different faiths and different ideologies.
Dr. Socratez Yoman, it is a quite close to a number of government and a military figures in Papua. His experience associates with them, illustrating how there are differences of views between them, it's does not making their relationship tenuous or disconnected. He gave such testimonials:
"My experience was when Pak Tito Karnavian became are Papua Regional Police Chief. He was Muslim and I am Christian. He was the guardian and guardian into ( NKRI) and I was more in favor of the people in West Papua who fought for a better and peaceful future.
I often send writings firmly and hard and seem rude. He responded with smart and elegant ways. At one time there was a reception of police officers. I asked him to pay attention to the son of my friend from Tanimbar who took the test. He texted me:
'Rev. Dr. Socratez Yoman if he is health, and psychology pass, that's my main attention.'
Finally, the child is accepted and the best graduate is the second business. The same child, his parents came to me so, I asked to police chief transfer his son from Timika and police to Jayapura with am I going to in college.
I ask to the Papuan Regional Police Chief in right niow, Mr. Boy. He ordered to transfer this member to Jayapura province."
According to Dr. Socratez Yoman, friendship must go beyond any differences, including differences in ideology and faith. This is how he wrote:
"If we follow, my articles are always critical and criticize into government / state indonesia and members from Amry and Police ( TNI / Polri). My articles are almost in conflict with the State jakarta.
The question it's whether only, because of different faiths and ideologies between us, we distance and destroy our friends, and destroy solidarity?
Differences in faith and ideology are not obstacles, not obstacles, not obstacles to respect and respect the dignity of our neighbors in the spirit from solidarity. Your religion it's not my religion and your ideology it's not my ideology.
But, we are fellow human beings that's God presents through our parents to be a blessing, and helper to our neighbor without distinguishing to faith, to belief, to religion, to race and then ethnicity. "
His a good relationship with a National Police Chief and the Papua Police Chief, according to him, is a reflection that different faiths and ideologies will nothing to be able defeat are conscience of sincerity, honesty, and love taught by God.
"We see American crime in Iraq, during the overthrow of Sadam Hussein. Is there in Iraq the production of weapons of mass destruction alleged by America?
The answer is no. Then motivation and what is George Bush's main mission in Iraq? Oil. Is this not an act like a terrorist?
Islam is not a terrorist. The terrorists are humans who are Christians and Muslims. Come on, we fight terrorists not against their religion. "
Behind the tone of speech and his writings are firm, honest and hard, wrapped in messages of harmony in the midst of differences in faith.
When two years ago in Jayapura there was a riot because of an incident which allegedly was the burning of the Bible by unscrupulous security forces, Socratez Yoman appeared to give coolness.
Some consider the event to hurt the feelings of the people and is one form of blasphemy. But Socratez Yoman actually called for forgiveness.
"Christians do not worship the Bible, but believe and worship the Lord Jesus delivered through the Bible," Socratez Yoman said.
"The Bible does't to need be defended. We are taught the contents of the Bible to love and forgive." He added that the Bible burned would not make God's power collapse. "We a live not to defend to the Scriptures or the Bible. We are asked and taught through the Bible in love enemies and fight for justice and uphold to be truth of peace."
Dr. Socratez Sofyan Yoman completed he is studies in the English Language Study Program at (FKIP) Cendrawasih University in 1994 and completed his Masters and (S3) doctorate studies at Walter Post Theological College, in Jayapura province.
The books of his work include the Papuan People Not the Separatists (1999), the Door to Free Papua (2000), the Act of Free Choice in West Papua (2000), the Papuans Not the Separatists, Treason and (OPM)West Papua Liberation Army(2005), Melanesian Ethnic Annihilation (2007 ), Church Voice for the Oppressed People (2008), Voice for the Voiceless (2010), We Drink Water from Our Own Well (2010 and (OPM)West Papua Liberation Army(Division and Independence Autonomy) (2010).
About his books, Dr. Socratez Yoman said he had a longing show to historical evidence, government promises, and various kinds of cruelty, violence, exploitation and then inappropriate discrimination that had occurred since the December 19, 1961 until to sicuation of democracy, globalization and information today. I just want to say that it is not the time for God's people to be oppressed with separatist a stigmas, treason and (OPM) West Papua Liberation Army. "
Ikrar Nusa Bakti, a LIPI researcher, who is currently Indonesia's ambassador to Tunisia, considers that what is voiced by Socratez Yoman is inseparable from his figure as a pastor who voices the voices of those who do not speak.
"Papua is indeed different from other predominantly Christian populations in Indonesia. In Papua, church leaders are also politicians who actively voice the fate of their people.
Perhaps, once again it is possible, clergy in Papua see that voicing sadness and hope for the political future of Papuans is also part of serving the people, "he wrote in the introduction to a book by Socratez, OPM (Autonomy, Expansion and Freedom).
Another uniqueness of Papua, according to (Ikrar Nusa Bahkti), is the harmony of religious people.
"Around the 1960s near the Navy Headquarters in Soridoi, Biak, at that time we Muslim children were on a convoy of takbiran vehicles because tomorrow was the Eid al-Fitr. When approaching a church, the coordinator asked us to be quiet for a moment. the church is also holding services before Christmas.
What happened then was really moving: Christians welcomed us and declared further takbir which voiced God's asthma. How beautiful the harmony of religious people in Papua at that time, which I am sure is still maintained until now. "
